History of the 1915 Indian Big Twin

This Indian Big Twin, serial number 85G640, was manufactured in the autumn of 1915. It was sold later that same year to Mr. Herbert Hovise of Emlenton, Pennsylvania, and was registered under license plate 'T2 DX'.

Mr. Hovise used the motorcycle until 1936. Judging by its condition, it was only used minimally during that period and was then withdrawn from regular service.

The motorcycle remained in the possession of the Hovise family heirs until 2007, when they sold it to Mr. Darryl Whitow, owner of the Indian Museum in Brisbane, Australia.

In 2015, he sold it to the largest vintage vehicle museum in Karaka, New Zealand.

The motorcycle changed ownership again in 2020 when it became part of the collection of current owner.

Today this 1915 Indian Big Twin can be proudly called an incredible time machine, being in totally unmolested original condition, with its first paint of the iconic red color with original Indian decals and signs, cylinders and other components covered in their original nickel platings.

The machine is fitted with the famous Hedström engine having an imposing displacement of 1000cc; an advanced three speed gearbox - quite modern for its time; a Dixie magneto ignition and with its original hard to find early carburettor.

Equipments include a complete US-manufactured acetylene lighting system with Prest-O-Lite headlamp and gas generator, original leather covered Mesinger solo- and passenger seats, and a practical toolbox mounted on top of the fuel tank with a nice little lock having an 'Indian' engraving.

The Indian is in a fine mechanical condition and in running order; with its fine details and outstanding originality,  this 1915 Big Twin could be easily called a prestigious jewel for any serious collection or museum.
