Indian "Four" motorcycles were built by the Indian Motocycle Company from 1928 to 1942. It was based on the Ace motorcycle, which Indian bought as part of the assets of the Ace Motor Corporation in 1927.
For 1940, the ultimate version of the Four was developed, having a frame modified to include the advanced plunger rear suspension. In the same year, all Indian models were restyled with large, decorative fenders with aluminium side skirts - which design later became one of the styliest in Indian's manufacturing history.
The Four was discontinued with the rest of civilian production in 1942 and was not returned to production after World War II ended.
This specimen of the famous Indian Four is a highly original, well preserved motorcycle, having Scandinavian roots from Sweden.
It is in a really nice patinated original condition, finished in classy black enamel paint with chrome plated details.
The engine of this mighty Indian is the most advanced version of the Four's, it is an inlet-over-exhaust engine, having fully enclosed valve mechanism and automatic lubrication. Clylinders are cast irons, the removable heads are made of cast aluminium.
Top speed of this Four was around 100 mph as it came out new from the factory and it could be throttled down to walking speed in top gear !
This Indian Four is fitted with a four speed gearbox, Linkert carburettor and a big US made Autolite generator and a four cyl. distributor - having an adcanced coil ignition for easier starting and for more reliable performance.
Equipments include the tank-top mounted instrument panel - holding a Corbin speedometer, Indian ammeter and ligh switch; original Motolamp headlight with additional chrome plated double spot-lights; Indian faced electric horn; original US made oil pressure gauge and a practical built in side stand.
The Indian is in a good working order in running condtion; with its fine details and outstanding originality it is sure to be a desirable item for any Indian collector or museum.
